The name of this world is Lunaris. This is due to the huge influence that tides and moons have on the life of its dwellers. When "Lu" and "Nar" ( the two moons) meet in the sky once every ten years, huge tidal waves lay waste all over, crushing against the islands like tsunamis. Instead when both moons are very far, the sea is so low than many Islands are connected by land bridges: this is called the "Lunar Fest", a time when pilgrims travel a lot and peace is struck between the various Island kingdoms.
Each little Isle Kingdom has a small town which is built on top of the Island, to be far from the tides and to be able to communicate with the other Kingdoms. The tallest building is always a Light-Temple, a tall slender building where the Light-beares,the prieststess of these Islands, live. At night when only the Lu and Nar brighten the sky, the Lightbeares chant and light up their halls in the Ligh-Temples, on top of the Islands... this is called the "Chant of Stars on Earth" since the sea of Lunaris lights up with with flickering lights that resemble a starry sky.
The temple lights can be used to communicate and this is called the "Light Speech".
The Kings of Lunaris are the "Mariners". They are so called since they are chosen for their skills as seafarers and for their strenght as warriors.
The Mariners are always busy fighting other Islands because of fickle reasons: the Lunarians are very proud people. But when the tide is high and the night is at it blackest, all the Mariner Kings ally to fight against "the Dark Ones". These are huge dark water snakes that prey on ships and slither into the islands at night to feast on children.
The Lightbearers say that white is a holy colour to the goods and it protects against the Dark Ones; for this reason doorsteps and boats are always painted in white...
